Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah sworn in as Namibia’s first female president

Windhoek, Mar. 21, (dpa/GNA) – Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was sworn in as president of Namibia on Friday, three and a half months after her election victory.

The former vice president is the first woman to lead the southern African nation. She is the third woman to hold the office of president in an African country, after Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf in Liberia and Samia Suluhu Hassan in Tanzania.

The 72-year-old was elected at the end of last year with 58.1% of the vote.

Nandi-Ndaitwah has said she will focus on fighting high youth unemployment and investing heavily in green energy, agriculture and infrastructure during her five-year term.

She is considered an advocate for women’s and children’s rights and has held several Cabinet posts in the past, including those of environment minister and foreign affairs minister.
