Accra, March 17, GNA – Some teachers in Ga South District in the Greater Accra Region have attributed students’ disinterest in education to lack of parental support.
According to the teachers, the lack of basic support from parents has resulted in absenteeism, poor academic performance and teenage pregnancy, among students.
This was made known to the Ghana News Agency when its news team visited some basic and junior high schools in the district.
Some of the schools the GNA visited were Honise M/A Primary School, Amuman M/A Basic School and Hobor M/A basic school.
“Some of the children face financial challenges. They have parents alright but they are not ready to support them…Some of them are being forced to date a guy they are not ready to date just so they can get money and, in the end, they get pregnant and drop out of school.” Madam Salomey Appah, Girls Education Coordinator, Honise M/A Primary School said.
She called on stakeholders in education to organise fora to educate the parents in the three communities on the importance of education.
“I think they should educate the parents. First, the parents must know the essence of education, she said.
She also called on international organisations to support the students with basic items to make the students stay in school enjoyable.
“Also, they can support them yearly with things, let us say sanitary pads, underwears and other things; they will be happy,” she said.
Madam Eunice Effah, Teacher, Honise M/A Primary School, also told the GNA that some of the students were willing to learn but the lack of support from parents was the cause of the apathy.
Therefore, she urged stakeholders to help salvage the situation.
Meanwhile, the two teachers expressed their joy over the “Free Sanitary Pads to schools” initiative by the Mahama administration.
They said it would go a long way to keep the hitherto menstrual poor female students in school during their periods.
