Anloga: NCCE marks independence day celebration with quiz for basic schools

Tegbi (VR), March 6, GNA-The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Anloga District of the Volta Region has organised a quiz competition for some Basic schools in the area to commemorate Ghana’s 68th Independence anniversary.  

The event, held at Tegbi RC Basic School, was aimed at educating students about Ghana’s history, cultural heritage, and the struggles of the country’s founding members for independence.  

The participating schools included Tegbi R.C. Basic School, Tegbi-Agbedrafor M/A Basic School, Tegbi-Kpota E.P. Basic School, and Tegbi-Afedome M/A Basic School, and unfortunately Tegbi Ashiata M/A basic could not make it. 

Madam Emmanuella Woelikplim Apetorgbor, Assistant Civil Education Officer at Anloga, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said that four out of five schools participated in the quiz competition, which covered subjects such as English language, current affairs, and constitutional knowledge.  

She said that the quiz competition was also designed to keep students informed about Ghana’s history and cultural heritage, among others, emphasising the importance of educating students about their country’s past, highlighting the significance of Ghana’s independence struggle. 

She said other schools would also benefit from the quiz competition in the subsequent schedules across the district.  

Mr Dominic Yao Dzanado, Director of the Anloga Education Directorate, who was the guest speaker during the occasion, delivered a keynote address on the theme: “Ghana’s Future: Our Collective Responsibility,” and encouraged students to study hard and become responsible citizens in the future. 

“This quiz competition was not just about competing, but also about gaining knowledge and understanding of Ghana’s history and the struggles of its founding members all students have to take the lessons learned from this competition and apply them to their lives.” 

He said the quiz was also aligned with the NCCE’s goal of promoting constitutional knowledge and awareness among citizens and the commission has established Civic Education Clubs in schools across the country to achieve this objective. 

He said the NCCE also aimed to empower young Ghanaians with the knowledge and skills necessary to become active and responsible citizens while the commission believed that educating and informing citizens were essential for Ghana’s development and progress. 

Mr Dzanado said that the success of the quiz competition demonstrated the NCCE’s commitment to promoting civic education and patriotism among Ghanaian youth. The event serves as a model for similar initiatives across the country. 

Meanwhile, Tegbi RC Basic school emerged winners with 51 point, with Tegbi Kpota EP school came second with 38 points, while Tegbi Agbedrafor M/A basic school and Tegbi Afedome M/A basic school gathered 34 and 28 points each to occupy third and fourth positions respectively. 

Some students and teachers, GNA spoke with, expressed excitement about NCCE’s quiz competition which was a commendable effort to promote civic education and patriotism among Ghanaian youth while the event highlighted the importance of educating students about their country’s history and cultural heritage, and served as a model for similar initiatives across the country. 

All participant took home pen, pencil, exercise books, among others.
