Accra, Feb 18, GNA – Madam Mavis Kuukua Bissue, a National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament (MP) for Ahanta West Constituency, has emphasised the need for a comprehensive approach to address sanitation challenges, homelessness, and slum proliferation in Ghana.
” Mr Speaker, we cannot win the sanitation war until we purposefully and pragmatically begin to tackle homelessness, streetism, and slum proliferation in urban and peri-urban communities,” she said.
Madam Bissue made the remarks when she delivered a statement on a comprehensive approach to tackling sanitation challenges on the Floor of Parliament on Tuesday.
She noted that despite budgetary allocations to the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, the sanitation situation in Ghana remained dire, with only 25 per cent of households having access to basic, safe sanitation infrastructure as of March 2023.
She, therefore proposed measures to address these challenges, including a national dialogue on rural-urban migration and economic empowerment, a deliberate housing and urbanisation strategy for rural communities, and a national drive on proper waste segregation and disposal.
“Mr Speaker, let us commit to these measures and work together to transform our urban and rural landscapes for the betterment of all citizens,” she urged.
