Sayikope (V/R, Feb. 4, GNA – The reconstruction of the collapsed Aklakpa bridge at Sayikope in the Central Tongu district of the Volta Region is nearing completion, with officials predicting a significant boost to socioeconomic activities in the area once the project is finished.

Mr Roland Apiani Mensah, an engineer from the Ghana Highways Authority, stated that the reconstruction work was currently 40 percent complete and would end in April this year.

He noted that the new bridge, designed with a dual carriage, was expected to possess enhanced structural integrity, improved load-bearing capacity, and increased resistance to environmental factors, ensuring a safer and more reliable transportation route.

Mr. Mensah said quality control measures are in place to ensure that the bridge meets the required standards.

Mr Guggisberg Fiagbenu, Assembly Member of Adidome Central Electoral Area, expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the reconstruction work.

He noted that the completion of the bridge would have a significant impact on socioeconomic activities in the area, including trade and commerce.

Mr. Fiagbenu appealed to the government to give a facelift to the second bridge in Tsetsekpo, with the goal of upgrading it to a dual carriage bridge as well.

The reconstruction of the Aklakpa bridge is a significant development for the local community, which has been affected by the bridge’s collapse since January 2024. The collapse, caused by the weight of a trailer truck carrying 600 bags of salt, stalled socioeconomic activities in the area, including trade and commerce, and forced residents to rely on canoes to cross the Aklakpa stream.
