Atebubu, (Bono East), GNA – Police at Atebubu in the Bono East Region fired gunshots to disperse some aggrieved commercial drivers who besieged the Atebubu Police Station in the early hours of Saturday.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) gathered that the aggressive drivers were at the police station to demand justice for their colleague who was attacked and killed by a group of armed robbers on the Atebubu-Kumasi highway on Friday night January 10, 2025.
Police had since deposited the body of the deceased, Ali Ibrahim, at a mortuary in the town.
However, no arrest had been made.
Military reinforcement had arrived in the town to bring the situation under control.
The Atebubu Township remained calm.
Though the police officers on duty had since left the station, the angry drivers burnt car tyres as residents around the police station enclave remained in doors.
Some of the aggrieved drivers who spoke to the GNA on condition of anonymity complained about the rampant cases of armed robbery on the Atebubu-Kumasi highway, calling on the police to beef up security on the stretch.
Recounting the Friday’s robbery attack, one of the drivers told the GNA the incident happened around 2012 hours at Patuda, a community between Atebubu and Amantin along the highway, indicating that most of the armed robberies happened at that particular spot on the highway.
The Atebubu police have declined to comment on the incident.
