Sunyani, (Bono), Dec. 4, GNA – Madam Cynthia Anima Boadu, Bono Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), says misinformation and disinformation threatens the prevailing national peace and stability.
She therefore urged the media to contribute their quota to stem their spread in the electioneering.
She highlighted the critical role of the media in managing and controlling disinformation and misinformation in the electioneering and advised practitioners to endeavour to fact-check and verify information before going to press and to stem spread of fake news in the media space.
Mad Boadu gave the advice when speaking at the opening session of a day’s media training workshop on the Election 2024 for some Journalists in Sunyani.
It was on the theme “the role of the media in promoting peaceful election 2024” and organised by the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association and sponsored by the Fidelity Bank Ghana and ActionAid Ghana, a Non-governmental organisation.
Attended by about 74 media practitioners, the workshop aimed further to explore ways in which the media could help prevent electoral violence and promote peaceful General Election.
Mad Boadu reminded the media of their responsibility to shape public discourses, and help the public to identify fake news, disinformation, and misinformation.
The media also have the responsibility to help the public verify credible sources, monitor and refute misinformation and disinformation on digital space and on the new media.
Mad Boadu also entreated the media to publicise the Election 2024 and increase awareness creation and education about the electoral process and asked them to also remain circumspect in their election reportage.
Mr Guggisberg Asirifi-Young, the Bono Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), urged the media to avoid the temptation of rushing to declare the outcome of the General Election, instead wait for the final results from the EC.
