Accra, Dec. 04, GNA – The Klottey Korle Municipal Education Directorate has donated a range of items, including toiletries, sanitary towels, liquid soaps, stationery, drinks, and biscuits, to Castle Road Special School.

The gesture was in celebration of this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) on December 3.

The donation was presented by Mr. Philip Aidoo from the Directorate, was received by Mr. Frederick Amedzake, Headmaster of Castle Road Special School.

Mr. Aidoo stated that the gesture was aimed at supporting the school and encouraging the dedicated staff to continue their hard work with the students.

The items were provided based on the school’s specific requests, with contributions from corporate organizations and philanthropists.

Mr. Aidoo said it was important to create opportunities for persons with disabilities to engage in decision-making processes and called for a more inclusive and sustainable future where PWDs could make meaningful contributions.

“A world of equal opportunities, where persons with disabilities can thrive and contribute fully. A society that values diversity, promotes inclusion, and empowers persons with disabilities to reach their dreams,” he added.

Mr. Amedzake said that the school trained students with intellectual and developmental disabilities in both educable and non-educable categories.

However, he noted that the school faced significant challenges, particularly in terms of infrastructure and logistics.

He emphasized the need for better classrooms, learning materials, and essential facilities, such as water, sanitation, and hygiene services.

Mr. Amedzake appealed to the government and benevolent organizations to assist in providing the necessary boarding facilities, which would allow for better monitoring and care of the students.

He also expressed gratitude for the generous donation and called for continued support from philanthropists and other organizations.

Established in 1968, Castle Road Special School currently serves 43 learners, comprising 31 boys and 12 girls, with a dedicated team of three teachers and three house mothers. The school is committed to providing specialized education for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities aims to raise awareness about the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities across all sectors of society.

This year’s theme, “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future,” underscored the importance of inclusion and leadership from persons with disabilities in shaping a more equitable future.
