Sunyani (Bono), Dec 30, GNA – More than 400 widows in the Sunyani Municipality have undergone free screening exercise to know their various health conditions in the festive season.

A team of medical and health professionals from the Sunyani Teaching Hospital, led by Dr Paul Adu-Domfeh, took the aged women through eye tests, counseling and medications.

The beneficiaries were also screened for diabetes, body mass index, hypertension and various ailments and sugar levels.

Jalisburg Charity Foundation (JCF) in collaboration with the Kwame Appiah Widows Association and the Sunyani Traditional Council organized the exercise and also feted the widows to put smiles on their faces.

They were provided with sumptuous meals, varieties of non-alcoholic beverages, and entertained with pulsating live band music and also received special Christmas gifts.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the side-lines of the event in Sunyani, Evangelist Alexander Gyan-Benneh, the Chairman of JCF, said the Holy Bible enjoined Christians to support the needy and the vulnerable in society.

“We receive bountiful blessings from God if we care and show love and compassion to the vulnerable people in society”, he stated, and urged wealthy people to support the needy in society.

Mr Kwame Appiah, the Founder of Kwame Appiah Widows Association, called for support to the welfare of widows and to make life comfortable for them.

“Widows are also part of society, and we must protect their rights and dignity, instead of alienating them in society”, he stated, and called for punitive measures against people who labeled widows and the aged as witches and wizards.

Nana Akosua Asor Sika Brayie II, the Paramount Queen Mother of the Sunyani Traditional Area, who presided, also called on wealthy people, corporate bodies and religious organisations to support and improve the socio-economic livelihoods of widows and commended the organizers for the event.
