Accra, Dec. 10, GNA — The Association of Women in the Media (ASWIM) has congratulated Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on her historic achievement as Ghana’s first female Vice President.

The association hailed her trailblazing journey, noting that her outstanding accomplishments, from academia to politics, serve as an inspiration to countless women and girls across Ghana and Africa.

In a statement signed by Mrs. Mavis Kitcher, President of ASWIM, and shared with the Ghana News Agency in Accra, the association praised her remarkable sense of purpose, discipline, vision, scholarship, tenacity, and dedication to excellence.

It emphasized that she had been innovative and embodied the Ghanaian proverb, “ahwene pa nkasa,” meaning that one’s exemplary deeds and character speak for themselves.

“ASWIM celebrates your remarkable career, marked by numerous firsts, including the first female Vice-Chancellor of a state university – the University of Cape Coast, (UCC), and the first female to hold a professional chair in Ghana, (UCC),” it said.

The statement highlighted that as a visionary, Professor Opoku-Agyemang founded the University of Cape Coast’s (UCC) Research and Development Endowment Fund to support research initiatives, established the Women’s Development Centre, and introduced the Unilever-Ghana Foundation Scholarship Scheme to assist needy students, among other initiatives.

These efforts, the statement said, were significant contributions to the empowerment of women, the vulnerable, and the promotion of quality education.

The statement also noted that she was rightfully honored with the prestigious “Order of the Volta Award” in recognition of her outstanding contributions to education and public service.

It stated that her achievements were a testament to the brilliance, resilience, and resourcefulness of the truly remarkable African woman.

“As she takes on this new role, ASWIM proudly lauds her commitment to education, women’s empowerment, distinguished public service and patriotism,” the statement said.

The association expressed confidence that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s pursuit of excellence, love for humanity, humility, decency, modesty, and commitment to the welfare of the vulnerable would define Ghana’s political leadership and public service.

“We are also hopeful that her unwavering purposefulness, hard work, and commitment to inclusivity will complement the President’s efforts to deliver transformative change and socio-economic empowerment for all Ghanaians,” it said

ASWIM assured prof. Opoku-Agyemang of its ‘firm’ support towards advancing Ghana’s sustainable development achievement goals.

“May her tenure as Vice President of our dear country be filled with patriotism, wisdom, empathy, selflessness, and excellent accomplishments. Congratulations once again, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang,” the statement said.
