Tamale, Nov 07, GNA – The Savannah Women Integrated Development Agency (SWIDA-Ghana) in collaboration with STAR Ghana Foundation, has held a community engagement on electoral processes to help improve residents’ understanding involving the December elections.
The day’s event, held at Wamale, a suburb of Tamale, was also to empower community members to engage in peaceful dialogue during the elections period.
Hajia Alima Sagito-Saeed, Executive Director, SWIDA-Ghana, speaking during the event, said empowering communities with the right information would ensure that they participated effectively in the electoral processes.
She encouraged community members “To come out peacefully on the elections’ day and make their choices peacefully based on their preferred candidates without any intimidation or harassment.”
Madam Ragadahu Abdul-Wahab, Project Officer, STAR Ghana Foundation, underscored the importance of peace, saying it was essential for society’s progress.
Mr Anaba Sampson, Tamale Metropolitan Director, Electoral Commission, commended SWIDA-Ghana and partners for the initiative, and said it would help to improve citizens’ understanding of the electoral processes.
Superintendent Mr Richard Odertey, Deputy Commander, Operations, Ghana Police Service, Northern Region, said “Our main role during elections is to provide security and ensure that there is law and order before, during and after the elections.”
Mr Ziblim Abu, Assemblyman for Wamale Electoral Area, advised participants to tolerate one another, saying, “It is everybody’s right to vote for the person he or she thinks is competent to rule and govern the people of Ghana.”
