Accra, Nov 11, GNA-Madam Patricia Appiagyei, incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Asokwa constituency is confident of retaining the seat for the NPP for the fourth consecutive time.
Currently, the deputy majority leader in parliament, Ms Appiagyei
is optimistic that her good works over the years would translate into massive victory for her and the NPP come December 7, for continuity.
Madam Appiagyei entered parliament in 2012 after serving as the first female mayor of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) from 2001-2005 and as the deputy Ashanti regional minister from 2005-2009.
She became the first female MP for the area after defeating Mr Maxwell Kofi Jumah, also a former KMA boss and the incumbent MP for the constituency, in the party’s primaries in 2012 and has served as the chairperson for the Assurance, Special Budget and Lands and forestry committees of parliament.
In 2017, she was appointed to serve as the Deputy Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and a board member of Nuclear Power Ghana.
Ms Appiagyei who is a product of St Louis Secondary School in Kumasi and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) holds a degree in Economics and law and a postgraduate diploma in Development Economics.
She is one of the 40 females who entered parliament in 2020 and one of the 29 females who survived in the primaries of their parties during the selection of candidates for the 2024 elections.
The Asokwa constituency remains one of the strongest holds of the NPP and has occupied the seat since 2000 after snatching it from the NDC.
In 2012, Ms Appiagyei polled 64,904 votes representing (83.42%), in 2016 she had 55,564 votes (83.17%) and polled 45,727 (64.88%) in the 2020 elections, indicating a decline in her performance over the years.
Inspite of the down trend in her votes in the 2016 and 2020 elections, political watchers have predicted that she would win the seat.
