Agorhokpo (V/R), Nov. 24, GNA – The Volta Regional Inter-Agency Coordinating Committee on Sanitation, has declared five communities in the Agotime-Ziope District as open defecation free areas.
These communities are; Agorhokpo, Wuvi Number One, Gbeleme, Dohia Number One and Dohia Number Two, who attained the status through the help of Agotime-Ziope Area Programme of World Vision Ghana.
This was revealed by Madam Stella Kumedzro, the Volta Regional Director for Environmental Health at a programme organised by World Vision Ghana, to mark the celebration of World Toilet Day.
She commended World Vision Ghana for championing Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) activities in the area to protect the health of the people.
Mr Augustus Awity, the Volta Regional Coordinating Director, urged the citizens to prioritise sanitation and hygiene in their daily activities.
He explained that World Vision Ghana had been operating in the district for the past four years in the areas of WASH, health, education and child protection.
World Toilet Day, which is an annual United Nations Observance promoted through a worldwide public campaign, seeks to encourage action to tackle the global sanitation crisis.
This year’s campaign theme: “Toilet – a place for peace,” seeks to highlight the critical role sanitation in society, emphasising its importance as an essential part of the daily existence of people.
Mr Kennedy Amponsah Kyeremeh, the Acting Cluster Manager, Agotime Cluster for World Vision Ghana said, for billions of people around the world, access to proper sanitation was increasingly threatened by various factors, including conflict, climate change, disaster, and neglect.
He said this served as a call to action, advocating for greater attention to sanitation as a human right and the need for global efforts to ensure that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, had access to safe and reliable sanitation systems.
Mr Kyeremeh thanked all individuals and private enterprises who supported the construction of a disability-friendly household toilet for a vulnerable household, to honour the celebration.
Togbe Segbale II, the Chief of Agorhokpo commended World Vision Ghana for being concerned about their health and asked for completion of their community health and services compound.
World Vision Ghana used the occasion to present sanitation requirements to the five ODF communities and commissioned a disability-friendly household toilet for a vulnerable household to honour the celebration.
