Sunyani, Oct. 9, GNA – Professor Engineer Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah, the Vice Chancellor of the Sunyani Technical University (STU) says the university will soon introduce sports administration and management programmes.

He said the authorities were finalising processes, and therefore, appealed for support towards building and improving sports infrastructure at the university.

Prof. Adinkrah-Appiah made this known at a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a standard Astro-turf football pitch at the university’s campus in Sunyani.

The Middle Belt Development Authority (MBDA) is funding the project, expected to be completed within five months.

Prof Adinkrah-Appiah said the university required sports infrastructure including lesser sports so that it could obtain accreditation for the sports programmes.

“We need standard volleyball and basketball courts, gymnastic and athlete facilities,” he stated, and added that private sector support and investment were required too.

Prof Adinkrah-Appiah expressed appreciation to the MBDA for the facility, and expressed the hope the contractors would execute quality work and complete the project on time.

Earlier, Mr Foster Kwame Opoku Boakye the Bono Regional Director of the National Sports Authority called on the university to consider introducing the sport programmes to make it easier for the sports administrators in the region to upgrade themselves.

He said sports infrastructure development in the region had seen some transformation in the past years, saying about 15 artificial football pitches were currently under construction in the region.

Mr Boakye explained the Bono Region had huge sporting talents, which could be harnessed to push economic growth and development.

Mr Paul Tibil, the Bono Regional Director of the MBDA said the Authority was committed to deliver its mandate, saying it was working to address the deficit in the sports, health, education, water and sanitation, and the road sectors infrastructure.
