Sefwi-Wiawso (WN/R), Sept. 20, GNA – The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has formed an agro-ecology group among farmers in the Western North Region to help encourage the use of local and organic materials for fertilizer production.
According to the Association, training and educating farmers on the need to adopt organic farming methods was the way to go, hence, the essence of the group.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), at Sefwi-Wiawso, after the official inauguration of the group, Mr. Wepia Addo Awal Adugwala, President of the PFAG, said the group would provide an opportunity to raise awareness among its members on the need to use local and organic materials and for farming activities.
He explained that the group would bring together all farmer groups, civil society organizations and the media to champion the concept of agro-ecology farming across the region.
“We believe that the collaboration and support from all actors are critical to promoting agro-ecology and organic farming,” he stated.
Participants and group members, after the inauguration, welcomed the idea of forming the agro-ecology movement in the region, and pledged to adopt organic methods of farming.
They elected a seven-member committee to have an oversight responsibility on the role and activities of the movement with a task on them to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the group.
The committee is to also reinforce learning and promote community adoption, sales of organic materials with dedicated market platforms, and provide farmers with a clear step by step ways on utilising organic materials to enhance their agricultural practices among others.
Mr. Sarfo Mensah, Chairman for the committee, on behalf of the other members promised to educate more farmers to adopt the use of organic farming methods for sustainable agriculture.
