Algiers, Sept 14, (dpa/GNA) – Algeria’s incumbent President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has won a second five-year term in office, according to official final results announced on Saturday.
The election was held in the energy-rich country on September 7, pitting Tebboune against Islamist Hassani Sharif Abdel Aali and Youssef Aouchiche from the Socialist Forces Front.
Algeria’s Constitutional Court Saturday said Tebboune, was re-elected with 84.3% of the votes, while Abdel Aali got 9.5% and Aouchiche 6.1%, Algeria’s state news agency APS reported.
Voter turnout reached 46.1%, it added.
In the 2019 election that Tebboune won, nearly 40% of the eligible voters cast their ballots.
Tebboune, 78, was the clear favourite in the September 7 vote, as he is supported by major parties in the North African country.
He was elected president in December 2019, eight months after long-time ruler Abdelaziz Bouteflika was forced to resign under pressure following street protests and from the powerful army.
