Accra, May 1, GNA – A total of 315 youth in the La-Dadekotopon constituency have enrolled on the third session of the Nyɛ Awo Kpakpa Skills Training Programme.
The Programme, which is an initiative of Madam Rita Odoley Sowah, the Member of Parliament (MP), for the area, aims at equipping the youth with skills for self reliance and employment.
It also seeks to improve their living conditions and help to reduce the unemployment rate in the constituency.
Speaking at the launch of the third session of the programme at La in Accra, Madam Sowah said, a close follow up on activities of previous beneficiaries encouraged her to do more, since many have not only well-established themselves, but are also plying the trade, earning incomes and are sustaining themselves and their their children.
She said aside applicants for dressmaking, who undergo a six-month intensive training, all other trainees would undergo three months training, after which they would write the NVTI Proficiency Examination before graduating.
Madam Sowah, appealed to the trainees to be dedicated to the training process and respect their instructors.
Addressing the trainees, Nii Amasa Namoale, a former Member of Parliament for La, said the worrying unemployment rate in the country should compel the applicants to revere the skills they are being given.
“It will sustain them, and in the long term impact society,” he said.
He advised the youth against the politics of monetization and urged them to earnestly take advantage of the Programme to be self-sufficient rather than seek limited white-colour jobs.
He also advised the trainees that asking for tokens from some politicians could not transform their living conditions.
For her part, Mrs Grace Ayorkor Ntiabah, Administrator of the Nyɛ Awo Kpakpa Skills Training Programme, mentioned that considering the rapid world transformation, new training skills would be engaged to enable the applicants meet the demands of current trends.
The Nyɛ Awo Kpakpa Skills Training Programme started in 2022, has trained over 500 young people for free in La.
The programme inspires skill acquisition in areas such as cosmetology, cooking, fashion designing and dressmaking, detergent and beads making.
