Greek radio station and newspaper offices set on fire in arson attack

Athens (dpa) - The offices of Greek radio station Real FM and newspaper Real News were set on fire in an arson attack on Tuesday night.

The building in the north of the Greek capital Athens was severely damaged.

A sound engineer was rescued by firefighters and taken to hospital as a precaution, the newspaper To Proto Thema reported.

The fire was brought under control during the night, the fire service tweeted.

Home-made incendiary devices made using camping gas stoves reportedly started the blaze. There was no information initially about the possible motivation for the attack or the perpetrators.

“They are torching us! They are trying to shut us down,” tweeted the founder of the Real Group, journalist Nikos Chatzinikolaou.

Greek Economy Minister Adonis Georgiadis assured in a reply tweet that they would not allow the channel and the newspaper to close.

In Greece, and in particular, in Athens, there have repeatedly been attacks by anarchists and separatists on institutions including newspaper buildings, government offices and political party offices.
