Accra, June 16, GNA- The Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG) has begun a school tour project to help create awareness in their quest to develop interest in the sport in Ghana.
This was in response to a call from the National Sports Authority (NSA) to the Federation to help make the sport known in Ghana, by creating enough awareness.
Speaking in an interview with the GNA Sports, Madam Hilaria Wuaku, the Communications Leader for the Federation, said the project was a requirement from the NSA for Rugby League to be recognised in about eight regions in the country.
According to her, RLFG so far had been able to create awareness in some regions and were on the verge of making rugby a well-known sport in the country.
“So we started with Kumasi, we have done Volta Region, we have done Tamale, and we are currently in Eastern and Greater Accra Regions working with Pope Johns Senior High School and Englebert School”.
“The response so far has been great as most of these students and teachers we have gotten in touch with are willing to know more and learn more about the sport,” she added.
Madam Hilaria said the Federation had now partnered with the Salford Red Devils in UK to develop rugby and Oxford University in England, would be visiting Ghana ahead of their summer tour to help develop interest in the sport by organising a display match for students in the various schools.
“This project would not help only in Ghana but also for international purposes, as we are mandated to also develop the sport,” she said.
Rugby League Federation Ghana are still in the process of getting schools involved in the sport, including the Junior High Schools, Senior High Schools and those at the University level to help grow rugby in the country.
