Denmark to enhance water delivery, wastewater treatment in Ghana

Accra, Mar. 02, GNA – Denmark has reiterated its commitment to supporting Ghana to improve on access to potable water, wastewater management, and revenue generation in the urban water sector in the country.

This is part of a long-term goal Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) aimed at mobilising the competencies of Danish public authorities with counterpart authorities in development and growth economies for mutual benefits.

The Denmark-Ghana SSC is to ensure that the country has a sustainable water delivery system, and reduced environmental pollution through bilateral and commercial collaboration.

A statement issued by the Embassy of Denmark, Accra and copied to the Ghana News Agency said a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) would be signed to that effect.

The statement said the MoU would be signed between the Managing Director of Aarhus Municipality, Henrik Seiding, Mayor of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) and the Managing Director of Ghana Water Company Ltd (GWCL).

The Danish Embassy said the partnership with TMA was because of the high levels of loss of drinking water in the distribution system and the need for a clear plan for climate adaptation and waste water handling.

The statement added that the MoU would build up to the second phase of the Strategic Sector Cooperation for the next three years (2023-2025), after the first phase, which was from 2019 to 2022.

Also, it said: “The overall objective of the partnership is to achieve a well-functioning and sustainable water delivery system for Tema’s citizens and businesses, as well as reduced environmental pollution through improved collection and treatment of wastewater.”

Therefore, the Managing Director would, during a three-day (from March 1 to 3, 2022) visit Tema, explore ongoing activities in the SSC partnership between TMA, the City of Aarhus, Aarhus Vand and GWCL.

It said, Mr Seiding would be introduced to the upcoming Aveyime water project, which sought to deliver water to 1.2 million citizens in Accra’s Eastern part, with financing from Danida Sustainable Infrastructure Finance.

The statement said, the Embassy of Denmark would also welcome a delegation of seven Danish water companies in collaboration with the Danish Export Association.

The Danish water companies participating in the delegation include Alumichem, AVK, cBrain, Grundfos, LE34, Ramboll, and SUEZ Denmark.

The companies provide solutions across areas such as water supply and drinking water, non-revenue water, wastewater treatment and digital solutions for the water sector.

They will be exploring needs and business opportunities in Ghana’s water sector, gain market insights and build relationships with potential customers and key partners in the water sector.

Denmark has been active in Ghana’s water sector through many decades of development cooperation and commercial collaboration.

The country, through the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA), has been collaborating with the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) and Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to strengthen Ghana’s maritime sector.

It also collaborates with the Ghana Statistical Service to build a strong statistical database to enable policy makers to make evidence-based decisions, and allow citizens and civil society organisations to undertake evidence-based advocacy for change.
