Bamako, Jan 17, (dpa/GNA) – Mali’s former president, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, died on Sunday after a lengthy illness, according to the presidential office.
Keita came to power in 2013, then was ousted in a military coup in August 2020.
His term in office was marked by strong political instability.
Several Islamist militias are active in the former French colony with around 20 million inhabitants.
Mali has experienced three military coups since 2012.
The UN mission MINUSMA and the EU training mission EUTM both seek to provide support in the country.
