Amman, Jan. 27, (dpa/GNA) – The Jordanian army says it has killed 27 suspected drug smugglers during an exchange of fire to prevent them from entering from neighbouring Syria.
Some smugglers were injured and fled back to Syria, the army said in a statement published by the Petra news agency on Thursday.
Large quantities of drugs were seized following the incident.
The army is still searching the area, although the operation has been slow due to heavy snowfall, the statement said.
Clashes have erupted several times over the past weeks between Jordanian army personnel and smugglers at the border. An army officer was killed earlier this month.
