Cape Coast, Nov. 22, GNA – The Food and Drugs Authority has urged distributors and warehouse owners to adhere to the laws and practices that govern FDA-regulated products.
Mr John Odai-Tettey, Central Regional Director of FDA, said adherence to the regulations was to ensure that FDA-regulated products were of the required standard, safe and efficacious in the interest of public health and safety.
He said this at a workshop organized by the FDA on Good Distribution Practices (GDP) and Good Storage Practices (GSP) for distributors and operators of storage facilities in Cape Coast.
The meeting was aimed at discouraging participants from engaging in fraudulent activities that were against the public health Act, 2012 (Act 851), which regulates the undertakings of distributors, importers and operators of storage facilities.
Educating the participants on the public health Act,2012(Act 851), the FDA told the attendees that the disposal of expired and damaged goods must be done under the supervision of the FDA.
“We are vigilant about this because improper disposal of damaged goods causes a lot of health hazards. Also when damaged goods are inappropriately disposed they may find their way back into the market and consumers ignorantly consume them,” the FDA Director said.
He charged distributors to get the right training and qualifications to carry out GDP with expertise.
The participants were also advised to treat consumable products properly and transport them in the appropriate vehicles with the right people to handle them.
Regarding the suitable storage area conditions for keeping goods, the participants were advised to implement adequate pest control measures, have a regular cleaning schedule and observe general sanitation standards for keeping a warehouse.
Mr Odoi-Tettey urged participants to cooperate with the FDA to promote good distribution and storage practices and to participate in inspections conducted by the FDA.
