Accra, Sept.17, GNA – The African Global Response Energy Environment (AGREE), in partnership with the Ministry of Energy, will on Thursday, November 25, 2021, conduct a ‘National Energy Quiz’ for students in both public and private universities.
The competition, to be held in Accra, will climax a three-day programme by AGREE and the Energy Ministry from November 23, where Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of energy-related companies and vice chancellors of universities will deliberate on how to bridge the gap between the energy industry and academia and prepare students adequately for the field of work.
Industry players will use the platform to exhibit their goods and services with opportunities for students to explore opportunities in the energy sector and come out with problem-solving technological gadgets and ideas.
A Governing Board, chaired by Dr Benjamin Asante, the CEO of the Ghana National Gas Company, was inaugurated in that regard in Accra, to ensure the successful organisation of the competition and develop strategies to implement AGREE’s 2021 ‘Think Energy’ project.
Other members of the Board are: Professor Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah, Vice-Chancellor of the Sunyani Technical University, Prof Elvis Asare-Bediako, Vice Chancellor of the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani, The Reverend Dr. Daniel Nii Aboagye Aryeh, Rector of the Perez University College, and Mr Humphrey Tetteh, the Chief Operating Officer of AGREE.
The rest are: Mr Ebenezer Kofi Essienyi, the CEO of the Ghana Grid Company Limited, Mr Kwame Osei Prempeh, CEO of GOIL, Mr Justice Owusu, a Senior Lecturer at the Takoradi Technical University, Mr Benjamin Kwame Asante, Director of Petroleum at the Ministry of Energy, and Madam Henrietta Nkansah, also of the Energy Ministry.
Dr Asante, the Board Chair, asked the members to use the forum to educate the public and students on the importance of industry in academia and vice versa and build partnerships.
He advised that industries and schools built the capacity of staff and students in technology development and usage, adding: “The gap between academia and industry must be closed to make each recognise the importance of the other”.
Mr Tetteh, the Chief Operating Officer, AGREE, explained that the quiz would cover topics under petroleum, power, nuclear, and community relations.
On petroleum, students would be required to answer questions on oil and gas, oil and gas value addition, economics of oil and gas, petroleum revenue management, and oil and gas regulation in Ghana.
On nuclear, students will compete on basic nuclear physics and radiation protection, the nuclear industry, nuclear power and nuclear reactors & operations, nuclear law and legislation, developing a country’s nuclear power programme and Ghana’s Nuclear Power programme.
On power, participants will answer questions on power generation, overview of a power system and the Ghana wholesale electricity market.
The quiz will also task students to answer questions on the Ashanti Kingdom, their enstoolment and destoolment, the history of ethnic groups in Northern Ghana, and the history of the Western and Central regions under community relations.
Mr Tetteh said participants in the innovation competition would be tasked to create renewable energy technologies and ideas for electricity, heat, fuel production, energy efficiency technologies, clean cooking solution and policy, regulations, licensing, standards and labeling.
Winners will receive rewards including cash prizes of up to GH¢ 20,000.00, education-fun trips and consolation prizes.
