Tokyo, July 26, (dpa/GNA) – Hidilyn Diaz won a first-ever Olympic gold for the Philippines when she topped women’s 55kg weightlifting at the Tokyo Games on Monday.
Diaz finished with 224kg to beat Liao Qiuyun of China by one kilo, overtaking the world record holder with a last clean and jerk lift, an Olympic record 127kg.
The Philippines had won three silvers and seven bronze before at the Olympics, including a bronze from Diaz in 2016.
Zulfiya Chinshanlo of Kazakhstan, who won the then 53kg division in 2012 only to be stripped of the gold over doping in retests of samples, took the bronze.
