Adieyie (W/R), June 2, GNA – AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine has celebrated this year’s world Menstrual Hygiene Day with basic schools in the Mines host communities.
The annual event was held at Adieyie in the Tarkwa-Nusaem Municipality to create awareness on the importance of good menstrual hygiene management.
The mine in collaboration with the Tarkwa- Nsuaem Municipal Health Directorate and the Ghana Education Service observed the day.
Mr Enoch Osei, Manager of Land Access and Social Investment, addressing the gathering on behalf of the Acting Managing Director of the company, said prior to the event, the Mine organized a talk and demonstration on Menstrual Hygiene to keep them abreast and also distributed sanitary pads to five basic schools.
Mr Osei said, “with the intensive education, the girls have been empowered to manage their menstrual cycle properly and hygienically”.
The Manager of Land Access and Social Investment said as a Mine, they remained committed to ensure inclusive, equitable, quality education and promotion of life long learning in line with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 4.
He explained that over the years the Mine had demonstrated continuous support for improved educational standards through the provision of infrastructure, teaching and learning materials in the host communities through the basic education improvement project.
“We underscore the urgency of long term investment in women’s health and, therefore, let our voices to work tirelessly to ensure that no one is left behind in the Menstrual Hygiene Initiative, Mr Osei indicated.
The Municipal Health Director in charge of Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Mrs Caroline Effah Otoo advised the girls to avoid unprotected sexual activities and instead concentrate on their education so that they can become better citizens in future.
She pointed out that;”the best place for any adolescent to get information is from health workers, teachers and parents. For your peers is a no go area”.
Mrs Otoo lauded the Mine for the campaign saying ” with Adieyie being a rural community, the Mine had done extremely well by offering them this support. It would go a long way to help the girls handle themselves better and deal with any issue that may affect them when it comes to menstruation and its challenges”.
The queen mother of the Wassa Fiase Traditional Area, Nana Abena Kunadjoa II entreated the girls to confide in their parents anytime they have challenges.
