Cairo, May 8, (dpa/GNA) – An air attack targeted a military base hosting international forces in western Iraq, causing no casualties, a US-led alliance fighting Islamic State militants said on Saturday.
“Initial report: This morning at 0220 [2320 GMT Friday] Ain Al-Asad Air Base (AAAB) was attacked by an unmanned aerial surveillance system,” the alliance spokesman Colonel Wayne Marotto said on Twitter.
“No injuries reported. A hangar was damaged. The attack is under investigation,” he added.
The Iraqi military confirmed the attack.
“An explosives-laden drone crashed into Ain Al-Asad in the province of al-Anbar, causing no casualties,” the military-linked Security Media Cell said, according to Iraq’s state news agency INA.
So far, there has been no claim of responsibility for the attack.
It was the latest in a series of attacks targeting bases housing US forces in Iraq.
Last month, several rockets hit the Balad airbase, hosting US forces, north of the capital Baghdad, injuring two Iraqi guards.
In recent months, the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad – home to the US embassy and facilities hosting US troops in Iraq – has been the target of repeated attacks blamed on pro-Iranian groups.
