TMA launches 30 days to census night event

Tema, May 28, GNA – The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) on Friday launched ‘30 days to census night’ for the 2021 Population and Housing Census with a call on residents to cooperate with census officers during enumeration to ensure successful exercise.

The 2021 Population and Housing Census is on the theme; “You Count, Get Counted”.

Mr Felix Mensah Nii Anang-La, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive Officer in a speech read on his behalf appealed to residents to welcome the officers into their homes and premises and provide them with accurate information.

Mr Anang-La gave the assurance that census officers would be recruited from the communities they reside and would be assigned to those areas to enable residents easily identify them and collaborate with them.

He observed that the census was an important exercise carried out every 10 years adding that it would help government and the metropolis to get the needed comprehensive and credible data for the assessment of the socio-economic stand of the people.

He added that it would also help in informing which policies governments must formulate to help the various sectors of the economy.

According to him, this year’s census had special features including; being the first full data census to be conducted which would use internet for the transmission of results noting that it would also capture the GPS location of all structures, among others.

Mr Isaac Tetteh Angmore, Tema District Census Officer, explained that this year’s census would start with the training of the enumerators on May 31st which would be followed by the listing of structures on June 13, 2021.

He added that census night would be on the night of June 27th, during which church bells, Mosque speakers, sirens, brass band music, traditional performances and social media activities would be used to mark the night which would be the reference point for all information to be collected on the population and mark the beginning of the enumeration phase of the 2021 census exercise.

He said the actual enumeration would commence on June 28 to July 11, 2021 during which questions on personal data, ICT, sanitation related, mortality, and fertility, among others.

There were fraternal messages from stakeholders including; the Tema Traditional Council, Tema Chief Imam, and the Christian Council of Ghana who pledged to spread the news on the census in their communities using their various platforms.
