Sunyani, June 11, GNA – Officials of Zoomlion Ghana, a waste management and sanitation company defied a sporadic downpour which hit the Sunyani Municipality and carried out a disinfection exercise at the Third Battalion (3BN) Garrison at New-Dormaa, a suburb of Sunyani.
All parade grounds, churches, mosques, market places, and offices at the liberation barracks were expected to be disinfected in the two-day exercise aimed at helping to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) in the barracks.
Though the 150-member sprayers divided into gangs arrived at the barracks around 0700 hours for the exercise, which the Ghana News Agency (GNA) learnt was scheduled to start around 0730 hours simultaneously across all military barracks in the country, it delayed for hours.
No reasons were given for the delay, but the spraying gangs had to undertake the disinfection exercise in the rains, which set in around 1100 hours.
Speaking at a short ceremony prior to the commencement of the exercise, Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive acknowledged the immense contribution of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAFs) towards the fight against the COVID-19.
She asked the soldiers to ensure that their families and relations at the barracks adhered to health and safety measures to stem any possible spread of the virus disease.
Madam Owusu-Banahene reiterated that the Municipal Assembly and the Municipal COVID-19 Taskforce had stepped up precautionary measures to contain the pandemic, and advised the public to comply with government restrictions against it (pandemic).
She was hopeful that all schools in the Municipality would be disinfected as well, before they would be re-opened to protect teachers, pupils and students to stop the spread of the disease in schools.
Lieutenant Colonel John Yaw Kwarteng, the Commanding Officer of the 3BN, said the GAF played frontal role in the fight against the spread of the COVID-19 and was therefore necessary that the exercise was undertaken at the barracks.
He said the 3BN had intensified patrols and heightened surveillance within its operational areas to help stem the spread of the disease.
Mrs Esther Abayete, the General Manager of Zoomlion in-charge of Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regions expressed appreciation to the local media for supporting the Company in carrying out its activities.
