Accra, June 20 , GNA – Two hundred and eleven (211) Ghanaian evacuees from Lebanon, arrived at the Kotoka International Airport, in Accra, on Friday night.
They constitute the first batch of more than 600 female Ghanaian domestic servants rescued from the abuse they faced from their employers in the Middle Eastern country.
The mortal remains of two workers were returned alongside.
As part efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, the evacuees are undergoing the mandatory 14-day quarantine.
About two months ago, the Ghana Mission in Cairo, which has Lebanon under its jurisdiction, entered into dialogue through its Consulate in Beirut, with the Lebanese Government to obtain the release of “suffering young Ghanaian women from the clutches of their masters and mistresses, so they could freely return to their home”.
Consequently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, has said more than 600 domestic workers had been registered.
The Ministry, through the Cairo Mission, and a humanitarian Non Governmental Organisation, (NGO) IBONWORLD, have partnered to evacuate them.
The next batch is expected in the country in next three to four weeks.
