Accra, May 20, GNA – Standard Chartered Bank Ghana Limited has partnered the United Way Ghana to provide COVID-19 relief to vulnerable households at the Ayawaso District of the Greater Accra Region.
The relief package comprises nutrition packs, health and hygiene items to vulnerable households, literacy materials for children and sanitation items to a Community Health Centre.
United Way Ghana will also undertake community sensitisation to ensure families follow hygiene protocols.
Mr Kweku Nimfah-Essuman, the Chief Financial Officer, Standard Chartered, Ghana Limited, said the COVID-19 pandemic had disproportionately impacted the vulnerable hence the Bank was providing emergency relief to the underserved in Ghana through its one million Ghana cedis commitment.
“Having operated in Ghana for more than 120 years, we are committed to supporting our communities and the country at large during such dire times of need,” he said.
“Our immediate goal is to deliver relief measures to support the most vulnerable and it is the reason we have partnered with United Way to address the needs of the most impacted.”
“We shall continue mobilising our resources to support the most vulnerable.”
“Keeping in line with our brand promise to be ‘Here for Good’, particularly in times of adversity, we must ensure that every individual is empowered to be productive and live a life of dignity.”
The partnership is aimed at augmenting government and other stakeholders’ efforts to curb the outbreak of the virus, while embarking on a house to house sensitisation programme, using local language to ensure that targeted individuals are well-informed about the COVID-19 virus and how it spreads.
Janet Butler, the Acting Executive Director, United Way Ghana, said the organisation was happy to partner Standard Chartered to support the vulnerable.
“Most of the children in such communities receive their main meal at school and with the schools closed, they are left hungry. These relief packs will go a long way to feeding them as their families navigate through the economic challenges,” she said.
United Way Ghana is a non-profit organisation devoted to making real social impact in underserved communities through its ‘Improving Basic Education’ Programme.
It is member of United Way Worldwide, which has presence in 1,800 communities across more than 40 countries with 130 years of community impact, fighting for the health, education and financial stability of the vulnerable.
Beyond providing support for the vulnerable, Standard Chartered Bank has donated over 3000 PPE to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, the Ga East Hospital, LEKMA Hospital and Tema General Hospital.
The Bank also donated a portable Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) equipment to the Nogouchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research to assist in conducting widespread testing and detection of COVID-19 in Ghana.
