COVID-19: Elecnor distributes PPE to Ga North and West Municipal hospitals

Accra, May 15, GNA – To support government and stakeholders in the fight against the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) Elecnor SA Ghana Friday distributed Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the assemblies and hospitals in Ga North and West municipalities.

The items, valued at GH¢30,000.00, included examination gloves, alcohol-based hand sanitizers, veronica buckets, and face masks.

Elecnor SA Ghana is a Spanish engineering and construction company, which has executed a number of energy infrastructure development projects in Ghana including the ongoing Pokuase Bulk Supply Point.

Mr Mateo Perez Camino, the Country Director of Elecnor SA Ghana, said the company was conscious of the challenges the hospitals and assemblies were facing in the fight against the COVID-19.

“It is for this reason that we thought it right to supplement government’s effort in helping to contain the disease and prevent its spread,” he said.

Mr Perez said his office was doing its part to protect its workers and immediate stakeholders from contracting the virus by providing them with PPE and developing a plan to encourage them to adhere to the safety protocols.

He said Elecnor was ready to support the municipalities and hospitals anytime they needed help, adding; “Don’t ever hesitate to get in touch with us whenever you have concerns, because we are here for the wellbeing of the Ghanaian society.”

Mrs Esther Amoako Atta, the Health and Safety Officer of Elecnor SA Ghana, said the gesture was part of the several corporate social responsibility activities undertaken by her office.

Other supports were the organisation of free health screening exercise for residents in Pokuase and nearby communities and provision of solar powered street lights for residents at Ridge West and Koans Estates in Pokuase.

Ms Gertrude Ankrah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Ga North Municipal Assembly, expressed gratitude to Elecnor for the support as the PPE would help health workers within the area in the fight against the respiratory disease.

She entreated the public, especially those who did not believe in the existence of the Coronavirus, to do away with their doubts and observe the safety measures to stay safe.

“Some people have taken the safety protocols seriously, however others are still in denial because they claim not to have seen anyone with the disease yet. I will tell everyone that the disease is real, so do not wait to fall victim to it before you learn from it,” she advised.
Mr Clement Wilkinson, the MCE for the Ga West Municipal Assembly, expressed appreciation to the company for the support, saying they were aware of how much the COVID-19 fight had cost many companies and individuals.

The Hospital, he said, attended to more than 250,000 people, however, logistics to aid in the COVID-19 management in the Municipality was inadequate, a situation that had made contact tracing less effective.

Dr Eric Sarpong-Ntiamoah, Medical Superintendent of the Ga West Municipal Hospital, said the PPE would be of great help to the Hospital and promote efficiency in the health workers’ line of duty.

“Infection can spread from health personnel to an individual and it can also move from an individual to a health personnel. So these would even give our workers confidence to attend to their clients,” he added.
