Poor roads impeding education of children at Mwaakpa

Mwaakpa (UW/R), April 27, GNA – School children at Mwaakpa, a deprived community in the Wa West District of Upper West Region are unable to attend school at Tamvaar during raining seasons, due to the deplorable roads in the communities.

A resident of Mwaakpa, Mr. Zivina Yelbo, who revealed this to the Ghana News Agency at the community expressed worry that as the rains set in, the education of their wards would be terminated until the dry season.

He said anytime it rained, the community was cut off from other communities, but that their persistent appeal to the District Assembly to construct a road to link the community to Tamvaar to enable their children have an uninterrupted education did not yield results.

He said the lack of roads in the community was affecting economic activities, including; farming as they were unable to access market centres at Tamvaar and Wechiau to sell their farm produce and also to access tractor services for farming.

“If there is no road coming into this community, who will know people are living here and bring us something, as for us here, the road is what we need most before any other thing follows” another resident Mr. Dery Dabuo said.

Madam Diriye Soryeon, another resident noted that the lack of roads in the community also impeded their timely access to health care services in the community.

“We don’t have roads here when someone is pregnant and is about to deliver or when a child is sick, how to go to Tamvaar to get a car and go to the hospital at Wechiau is always a problem. What is worrying us now is the road”, she said.

The people also identified the inadequate source of potable water in the community as a major challenge to them as the community of over 200 people depends on one borehole for water.

Meanwhile, Mr. Yussif Gizuure, the Assembly Member for the area assured them that he would continue to lobby for the road from the District Assembly, and implored the community members not to give up on their appeal.

He said he desired that the basic needs of all the communities in the Baleofiili Electoral Area were met to enable them to have a meaningful life, but said that could not be achieved without the maximum support of the people.
