Iran congratulates Lebanon’s new president

Beirut, Jan 9, (dpa/GNA) – Iran congratulated Lebanese Commander of the Armed Forces, Joseph Aoun, on his election as president, in a post on X by its embassy in Lebanon.

Tehran hopes to promote the shared interests of both countries, according to a statement from the diplomatic mission.

The unexpected agreement in parliament on Aoun, shows the lessening of political influence of pro-Iranian Shiite militia Hezbollah, after the war with Israel and upheaval in Syria, which may weaken Iran’s regional influence.

Hezbollah was founded in 1982 with Iranian support, as a response to the Israeli invasion of Lebanon.

In the decades that followed, it became a powerful political and military organization with a major influence in the Lebanese state and its institutions.
