Ho (V/R), Dec. 26, GNA – The streets of Ho, the capital of the Volta Region, were unusually quiet on Christmas Day, Wednesday, December 25, with no significant events taking place to mark the occasion.
A visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) revealed a subdued atmosphere, with many major streets nearly deserted as from 1300 and 1500 hours.
This stark contrast to the typical festive buzz was attributed by some residents to the lack of money.
Several citizens, who spoke to the GNA shared varied perspectives on the quiet holiday.
“It’s just the economic situation,” one resident said. “There’s no money to celebrate, so people are staying indoors.”
Others mentioned that attending church services earlier in the day was enough celebration for them.
“I went to church, and that’s all I needed to mark Christmas,” said another resident.
Some, however, remained optimistic about the evening, expecting night events and gatherings to bring some excitement. Pub and drinking spot operators also expressed hope that the night would bring some relief.
“Business has been slow all day, but we are preparing for the evening,” said a pub owner near the Ho Main Market.
“People usually step out after sunset, so we are counting on that to make some sales.”
For many in Ho, this quiet Christmas reflected broader economic challenges affecting families and businesses across the region.
While the day lacked its usual festive flair, residents and business owners alike remained hopeful for a lively evening to salvage the holiday spirit.
Despite the calm on the streets, the essence of Christmas remained alive in smaller gatherings, church services, and the anticipation of nighttime celebrations.
