Nanton (N/R), Dec 21, GNA – The Anglican Diocesan Development and Relief Organization (ADDRO), an NGO, has undertaken a breast cancer screening exercise for women and caregivers in the Nanton and Mion Districts of the Northern Region.
As part of the screening, which was in partnership with the Ghana Health Service (GHS), the beneficiaries were also sensitised on how to spot early symptoms of breast cancer and the need for them to have their breasts examined at least every month.
The exercise, on the theme: “No one should face breast cancer alone”, took place at various health centres in the two districts namely Tampion, Nanton, Nantonkurugu, Zoggu, Jemile, Chegu, Nanvili and Tidjo.
It formed part of ADDRO’s Early Childhood Development programme dubbed: “Moments That Matter” (MTM), which is being implemented across six regions of the country with funding from the Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) in the United States of America.
In all, 685 caregivers were screened during the event by the GHS staff from the two districts.
Mr John Patrick Atampugre, Project Officer, Northern Region, ADDRO, speaking during the exercise, said it was to ensure early detection of the disease and to refer suspected cases for treatment.
He indicated that the excercise was necessary because mothers and caregivers were the target beneficiaries of the MTM programme, and said any suspected case would be referred to the GHS for the appropriate action to be taken to improve on the health needs of the caregivers and mothers.
Mr Damyar Duut, a District Disease Control Officer, who facilitated the excercise, advised all mothers to avail themselves for screening each month for early detection of the disease.
Alhassan Ekillima, a caregiver and a beneficiary of the breast cancer screening exercise, expressed gratitude to ADDRO and partners for the exercise, meant to ensure their wellbeing.
