Cairo, Dec 14, (dpa/GNA) – Ahmed al-Sharaa, who commanded an Islamist-led rebel alliance that toppled Syria’s long-time dictator Bashar al-Assad last week, criticised Israel’s military action in the war-shattered country on Saturday, saying it is unjustified.
“The Israeli pretexts have become flimsy, and do not justify recent transgressions,” al-Sharaa was quoted as telling pro-opposition broadcaster Syria TV.
“The Israelis have clearly crossed the engagement lines in Syria, in a way that threatens an unjustified escalation in the region,” the broadcaster quoted him as saying in a report published online.
Israel has carried out waves of airstrikes against facilities of former Syrian ruler, al-Assad’s military in several parts of the country. Israeli forces also moved into the buffer zone along the disputed Golan Heights, following the collapse of al-Assad’s regime.
Al-Sharaa, previously known by his nom de guerre, Abu Mohammed al-Joulani, stressed that the situation in Syria after years of war, does not allow involvement in a new conflict.
“The priority at this stage is rebuilding and stability, not getting dragged into conflicts that may lead to further destruction,” he said, according to Syria TV.
