Israel carries out dozens of strikes in Syria overnight

Beirut, Dec 14, (dpa/GNA) – Israeli warplanes conducted some 40 airstrikes overnight, targeting former Syrian military posts in the Damascus countryside, according to a monitoring group on Saturday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitor group, reported that the Israeli military destroyed several targets, including a research centre north of Damascus.

Since the ousting of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the Israeli Air Force has frequently carried out large-scale airstrikes against military facilities in Syria.

Among the targets, 28 airstrikes hit the eastern Qalamoun region, about 90 kilometres north of the capital Damascus.

Israeli aircraft targeted and destroyed a weapons depot, a military airport and underground tunnels, the war monitor added.

The lightning victory by an opposition rebel alliance, which took control of Damascus last weekend, ended more than 53 years of rule by the al-Assad family.
