Accra, Dec. 10, GNA – Mr. Fiifi Kwetey, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged party supporters to celebrate their electoral victory in a lawful and moderate manner.
“This victory belongs to the people of Ghana, and we must show responsibility in all we do. We have urged our members to exercise restraint, follow the law, and wait for proper instructions from the party leadership,” he said.
Addressing the media on Monday after a meeting with Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, Inspector General of Police (IGP), and the Police Management Board (POMAB), Mr. Kwetey said the party had issued directives to its members to refrain from acts that could jeopardise peace and security.
The meeting, held at the National Election Security Taskforce (NESTF) Press Centre in Accra, was convened to address incidents of post-election violence, including vandalism, destruction of property, and public disturbances attributed to some party supporters.
During the meeting, the IGP and his team expressed concerns about the actions of some party supporters, which they said were creating fear and insecurity in parts of the country.
They emphasised the importance of law and order, assuring that security agencies would arrest and prosecute individuals involved in acts of vandalism and violence.
Mr. Kwetey reiterated the NDC’s commitment to fostering peace, urging supporters to avoid provocations and respect the rule of law.
He assured the Police of the party’s cooperation, pledging to use the NDC’s structures to reach out to members and restore calm.
“We will ensure our supporters understand that this victory is for the people of Ghana, and it is our duty to uphold the nation’s peace and unity.”
“Let us work together to build a Ghana that is truly great and strong,” he said.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, Ghana Police Service, outlined some measures being implemented to maintain security during the post-election period.
These include enhanced visibility through joint patrols with other security agencies; intelligence-led operations within communities to identify and arrest perpetrators; deployment of static security personnel at state facilities.
There are also ongoing engagements between the Police and stakeholders, including government officials and community leaders and the establishment of a special investigative team to review video evidence, identify offenders, and ensure they face justice.
ACP Ansah-Akrofi assured the public that the Police were committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
“We urge Ghanaians to go about their daily activities without fear. The security agencies are working tirelessly to safeguard the peace of our nation,” she said.
She called on all citizens to cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to maintain law and order nationwide.
