NDC loses Afram Plains North seat to independent candidate

By Michael Armah

Donkorkrom (E/R), Dec. 9, GNA – Kpeli Worlase, an Independent Parliamentary Candidate, has won the Afram Plains North seat.

Mr. Worlase, a suspended member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) polled 11,452 of the valid votes against the incumbent member of Parliament, Mrs. Betty Efua Krosbi Mensah who garnered 10,992.

The NPP candidate, Asiamah K. Anim, polled 1,992.

This thus ends the 32 years dominance of the seat by the NDC.

Events leading to the contest in the constituency indeed gave hints of how competitive the election would be and indeed turned out so.

Mr. Worlase was suspended by the NDC for what the party described as misconduct.

In a letter dated 24th July 2024, the Party stated that it received reports of Mr Worlase’s alleged anti-party activities including campaigning against the party’s Parliamentary candidate, Krosbi Betty Efua Mensah in the Afram Plains North constituency.

The launching of his campaign, however brought Donkorkrom to a standstill and the battle lines were  drawn as expectation and anticipation of a major scare in the contest only increased.

The inroads of Mr Worlase into otherwise strongholds of the incumbent fueled the anxiety of the NDC leadership who in turns, visited the constituency to try and change the tide about to sweep the constituency.

Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketsiah, National Chairman of NDC, Dr. Omane Boamah,  Director of Election,  Mr George Opare Addo, the National Organizer and the Former President, John Mahama all on separate visits, tried in efforts to maintain the seat.

Mr.  Worlase, during his campaigns however urged his supporters to vote for the Presidential aspirant of the NDC.

In the Presidential contest, NDC’s John Mahama obtained 19,893 with NPP’s Mahamudu Bawumia polling 3,511.
