Atwima Nwabiagya South gets first female MP

       Nkawie (Ash), Dec. 9, GNA – Ms Shirley Kyei, the NPP candidate, has become the first female Member of Parliament for the Atwima Nwabiagya South constituency in the Ashanti region. 

The Member of Parliament-elect, 31, is also the youngest legislator for the area since 1992, when Ghana returned to democratic rule. 

Ms Shirley Kyei, secured 45, 352 out of   62,840, valid votes cast, representing 73 per cent, to beat her only contender, Mr Wisdom Osei Boamah of the NDC, who had 17,068 votes, representing 27 percent. 

The Parliamentary contest recorded 65 percent voter turnout out of the 96,757 total registered voters, who were expected to cast their votes from 197 polling stations. 

The Atwima Nwabiagya South constituency seat had previously been occupied by male MPs. 

They were Nana Yaw Bampoh of the NDC, Mr James Adusei Sarkodie, Benito Owusu-Bio, Anthony Osei Boakye and Emmanuel Agyei Anhwere, who all represented the NPP. 

Ms Kyei, who is also the Deputy Chief Executive of the Mineral Commission, told the Ghana News Agency after she was declared as MP-elect by the Electoral Commission at Nkawie that three key factors contributed to her victory in the parliamentary race. 

These included the will of God, hard work and dedication by the constituency party executives and supports, as well as the wish by the people in the area to have a female MP for the constituency for the first time. 

She pointed out that, the decision of the people, which was corroborated by the party delegates during the constituency primaries, which saw her elected from among three other male contestants, gave her the massive support at the parliamentary elections. 

She pledged to work hard to justify the confidence reposed in her by the people, through the implementation of initiatives that would help promote development and improve the livelihoods of the people. 

Ms Kyei called for unity, cooperation and continued support to enable her deliver as expected.
