Commissioner of CHRAJ commends Ghanaians for peaceful polls

By Iddi Yire

Accra, Dec 7, GNA – Mr Joseph Whittal, the Chairman, Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), has commended Ghanaians for a relatively peaceful conduct of the December 7 general election.

He gave the commendation in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on the sidelines of a situational report press briefing by the Coalition for Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) on the polls.

Mr Whittal noted that although there were some misunderstandings at some polling stations, the election was relatively peaceful.

He said the Commission had deployed 300 observers to the electoral areas to monitor the process and that it had also set up a situation room for observing the election.

Mr Whittal lauded CODEO for setting up a Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT) Centre and a National Information Centre to track results in real-time from polling stations to verify the Electoral Commission’s (EC) results.

The Commissioner appealed to Ghanaians to remain calm as they await the counting, collation and final declaration of the results of the election by the EC.

He expressed the hope that the turn out for the election would exceed 80 per cent.
