Kumasi, Dec. 07, GNA – A military officer, accompanied by a group of soldiers, has allegedly assaulted Alhaji Hamza Adams, a journalist with Voice of America (VOA) Hausa Service, at Bodisco Aboabo No. 2 polling station in Asawase constituency.
Hamza Adams, who also works with Kumasi-based Zuria FM, recounted that the officer confronted him and demanded he deleted videos he had taken of events at the polling station.
“There was a misunderstanding, and I was covering it when the military arrived.
They did a very good job of ensuring law and order.
As a journalist, I was covering the process,” Adams narrated to the Ghana News Agency (GNA).
He explained that the situation escalated when a military officer approached him for questioning. “He asked who I was. I identified myself as a journalist, showed him my Electoral Commission (EC) accreditation tag, and my work ID card.
He then asked why I was taking videos.
“I boldly told him I was doing my job as a journalist.
At that point, he snatched my phone and deleted all my videos,” Adams said.
Adams further alleged that the officer issued a direct threat, warning that if the videos were aired, his life would be in danger.
“He boldly threatened me, saying, he couldn’t locate my phone bin, and if I made the mistake of airing the video, my life would be at risk. I feel threatened. My life is in danger. I was just doing my work, and I am shocked by this treatment,” he added.
Despite the ordeal, Adams emphasized that he could identify the officer involved and disclosed that he had officially reported the incident to the police.
