Election 2024: Journalists attacked at a polling station in Wa

Wa, (UW/R), Dec. 07, GNA – Some journalists covering the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections at Wa in the Wa Central Constituency have been attacked by unknown assailants at the Danpuoripaala Centre Limanyiri polling station “B”.  

That was after the journalists attempted to film a scene of misunderstanding that erupted at the polling station.  

Mr Sualah Abdul Wahab, the Upper West Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) who is also the regional correspondent for Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and Martina Maasonuo Zaadong, the correspondent of Channel 1 TV, had their phones seized in the process. 

The unknown attackers threatened to smash the seized mobile phones belonging to the journalists and to beat up any journalist who filmed the scene. 

It took the intervention of some prospective voters at the polling station to restore calm while officers from the Ghana Police Service were dispatched to the centre that was manned by a prison officer to prevent future incidents. 

Mr Abdul Majeed, the Presiding Officer of that polling station told the Ghana News Agency that the scuffle ensued when he drove an “intruder” from the demarcated voting premise.  

The Danpuoripaala Centre Limanyiri polling station “B” have 404 voters on the register while the polling station “A” where Hajia Humu Awudu, the New Patriotic Party Parliamentary (NPP) Candidate for the Wa Central voted, also had 404 voter population. 

As at about 0002 HRS, 191 people had voted at the polling station “A” while 193 people had voted at the polling station “B”. 

Ms Afisa Salia, the Presiding Member of the polling station “A”, said they had not encountered any challenge in the election process. 

Meanwhile, Hajia Humu Awudu, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate, who voted about 1155 HRS, expressed the confidence of winning the election, saying, “I know God will not disappoint His children (the youth).” 

Dr. Hassan Rashid Pelpuo, the Parliamentary Candidate for the National Democratic Congress for the Wa Central, also expressed the confidence of emerging victorious at the end of the exercise. 

Naa Fusieni Seidu Pelpuo IV, the Paramount Chief of the Wala Traditional Area, who cast his vote at the Wa High Court Polling Station, appealed to the people to ensure the election was incident-free.
