Ho, Dec. 6, GNA – There are eleven females among the 58 candidates contesting the parliamentary elections in the Volta Region.
Careers in teaching and education dominate the cluster with 15 entries, data from the Volta Directorate of Electoral Commission show.
Public and civil servants on the list count six, health professionals account for two of the candidates, and there are five businessmen.
The remainder filled careers in engineering, agriculture, vocational trade and consultancy.
One candidate posted unemployed.
The lowest age is 30, shared by two candidates, and the oldest is the 68-year-old MP of Akatsi North.
A total of 41 of the candidates posted ages between 40 and 60, while the number of candidates in their 30s numbered 16.
The Keta, Central Tongu, Ho Central, South Dayi, and Kpando Constituencies each has independent candidates.
A total of 1,023,836 voters have been registered in the 18 Constituencies in the Region, and the Electoral Commission (EC) is operating 2,351 polling stations in 474 electoral areas.
Mr Eric Dzakpasu, Regional Director of the EC, assured the people of smooth voting on Saturday, ballot materials for which were being distributed.
The Region remains stronghold of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has 17 of the 18 parliamentary seats.
The Hohoe seat, snatched in 2020 by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has become the most watched in the Region this year as John Peter Amewu, the MP faces keen competition from Worlanyo Tsekpo, the NDC’s candidate.
The Ho Central Constituency is also on the watch.
NDC’s Edem Kpotosu is being hounded by the present Municipal Chief Executive Divine, Divine Bosson, candidate for the NPP.
Komla Klutse, a young IT innovator, is running as an independent candidate and is also making some progress towards the seat, rallying the youth base of the Regional Capital through dedicated engagements with the various circles and groupings.
