Tamale, Dec 06, GNA – A stakeholders’ engagement has been held to review and assess protective measures for vulnerable groups to ensure that gender-sensitive and inclusive principles are upheld in this year’s elections.
It was also to ensure that this year’s elections were inclusive, accessible, and peaceful for all citizens particularly women, youth, and marginalised groups.
The event dubbed: “Regional Stakeholders’ Dialogue on Election 2024″, was attended by representatives of political parties, the Electoral Commission, youth groups including persons living with disabilities amongst others.
It was organised by the Network for Women’s Rights in Ghana in collaboration with the Savannah Women Integrated Development Agency (SWIDA-Ghana), and Norsaac, all NGOs, as part of the broader goals of the Advancing Gender Responsive Governance and Inclusive Democracy in Ghana project.
The project is being implemented in partnership with STAR Ghana Foundation and supported by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
Hajia Alima Sagito-Saeed, Executive Director, SWIDA-Ghana, speaking during the dialogue in Tamale, said it was important that the elections were inclusive to further consolidate the country’s democracy.
She said that could only be achieved if marginalised groups, women, and young people were supported to participate effectively in choosing their own leaders without any form of discrimination and abuse.
Madam Fatima Luriwie Kanton, Deputy Northern Regional Director, Electoral Commission, gave assurance that measures were put in place to ensure that no registered voter was disenfranchised.
Mr Hamza Haruna Kaasankoomi, Northern Regional Secretary, Convention People’s Party said the party was gender-sensitive and expressed the party’s readiness to promote peace before, during and after the elections.
