Hohoe, Dec 1, GNA – A Hohoe multi-purpose stadium has been commissioned at an entertaining event, on Saturday, that saw the unveiling of a plaque, musical jamboree and some political activity.
Mr Kurt Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and Ghana’s football Maestro, Abedi Ayew Pele, jointly unveiled the plaque as special guests.
The 30,000-seater stadium, currently hosts Hohoe United, a Division One Club.
Mr John-Peter Amewu, the Member of Parliament of Hohoe, and Minister of Railways Development, narrated how he decided to rather build a stadium, instead of a hotel after receiving some 150 cement blocks, from a friend in July, 2005.
After procuring the land, its walling to secure the borders proceeded until 2008, when the New Patriotic Party government left office, he explained.
The project was, however, re-activated, when the party returned to power in 2017.
Mr Amewu said his motivation to undertake the project stemmed from his love for the people of Hohoe.
Additionally, the facility was to be used to unearth talents for diverse sporting disciplines for both national and international competitions.
He paid tribute to the current Togbega Gabusu VII, MamagaDowortornyo and the late Togbega Gabusu VI for their immense contributions to the success of the project.
He also thanked family friends, corporate institutions and philanthropists for making the dream a reality.
Mr Okraku, for his part, said quality infrastructure was fundamental to the development of superior football, explaining that “ good football talents could only be nurtured on quality playing fields.”
He noted that the high quality infrastructure would benefit several generations, adding that it was an “investment for our collective future.”
The GFA President said the Association was committed to building a solid foundation that could be built upon to sustain Ghana as a great football country.
An exhibition match played between a select side of past Black Stars players, which featured John Painstil, John Mensah, Agyemang Badu, Daniel Amartey, Inkoom among others spanked a select side of Hohoe Old players by 4-1.
Outstanding works on the stadium will be completed by next year.
