McDan Group outlines vision for Africa’s logistics sector

Accra, Oct 25, GNA – The McDan Group is working to deepen its footprint on the continent through strategic partnerships with organisations like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) secretariat.

The Ghanaian conglomerate is currently working on a billion-dollar deal with Kenya that would allow the company to extend its logistics and operations to the East African country.

Dr Daniel McKorley, Founder and Executive Chairman of the Group, stated the Company’s vision at the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Conference and Annual General Meeting.

Delivering the keynote address, he drew attention to the growing influence of foreign investors in Ghana’s logistics sector, particularly in air and sea transport.

Drawing on his journey from a messenger to logistics leader, McKorley stressed the importance of local ownership, innovation, and partnerships in shaping the future of the continent’s logistics landscape.

“Success is inevitable when opportunity meets preparedness,” McKorley said, reflecting on his rise in the logistics industry, which he described as the “engine of growth for every economy”.

He, therefore, called for local dominance in the sector and highlighted the critical role the sector played in national development, especially dealing with national emergencies.

Dr Mckorley, for example, noted how his outfit helped save lives by effectively distributing essential medicines and food across Ghana during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He announced that a new agreement had been reached with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GHAPOHA) to build a privately owned port, the first of its kind in the country.

The project aims to address Africa’s logistical challenges and offer locally driven solutions for trade and transport.

“In logistics, you need to be honest and have integrity. Without integrity, you crash,” McKorley stated, reinforcing the principles guiding his leadership.

He also celebrated the launch of his first ship to Vietnam, marking the revival of the historic Black Star Line.

The Chairman said the goal was to operate over 100 vessels across Africa towards reshaping the continent’s maritime logistics.

The panel discussion, featured industry leaders like Professor Kofi Abochi, who reinforced the importance of African-led initiatives in logistics and transport.
