Kumasi Aug. 30, GNA – The Ashanti Regional secretariat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has raised issues of irregularities in the voter register, which was recently exhibited by the Electoral Commission (EC).
According to the party the anomalies, if not promptly rectified, could severely compromise the integrity of the upcoming elections.
Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Secretary of the party, told the Ghana News Agency, that the NDC had detected numerous instances of questionable voter transfers, both into and out of specific constituencies within the Ashanti Region.
These transfers seemed to be irregular and raised suspicions of manipulation of the voter register with the intent to influence the election results.
Furthermore, he said, there had been instances of names of registered voters being omitted from the polling lists, and in certain cases, voters had been transferred to polling stations that were significantly distant from their original locations, including being moved to areas outside their designated electoral zones.
Dr Amoakohene stressed that these unacceptable irregularities could disenfranchise legitimate voters and lead to unnecessary tension on election day.
In response to these grave concerns, he said the NDC had formally corresponded with the Electoral Commission (EC), outlining its observations, and requesting immediate corrective actions.
The Regional Secretary indicated the office also requested a meeting with the EC to address these issues and ensure they were resolved amicably.
He reiterated that the NDC was unwavering in its dedication to democratic principles and would persist in its efforts to guarantee that the forthcoming elections were conducted in a manner that was impartial, equitable, and transparent.
He urged all stakeholders to remain vigilant and collaborate to ensure that the voice of the people was honoured and preserved.
