Accra, May 17, GNA – Participants at the Third Africa Media Convention in Accra have been treated to a spectacular performance of The Second Coming of Nkrumah, a play written by Ghanaian playwright Latif Abubakar.
The performance was part of activities marking the closing of the three-day convention.
The cheers and applause from the audience showed their excitement, as the original 120 cast, two-hour production was played out in 45 minutes.
The play portrayed the roles of the founding fathers of Africa, including Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President; Ethiopia’s Emperor Haile Selassie; Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya’s first President and anti-colonial activist.
Others were Patrice Lumumba, the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s first Prime Minister; Ahmed Sékou Touré, Guinea’s first President; and Julius Nyerere, former Tanzanian President.
In an interview, Mr Abubakar said that his play was a social and behavioral change project that was being carried out through theatre.
He said, besides being a point of contact for reorientation, the production sought to use theater to champion the economic emancipation on the Africa continent.
“Primarily, the play seeks to reorient our minds, to begin to think about how to achieve economic freedom in our space,” he said.
The Africa Media Convention brought together more than 1000 participants, including media practitioners, policymakers, academics and researchers from the continent.
